The AgEcon Club recently participated in the IFAMA Global Network Venture Building Challenge (VBC), which focused on empowering innovation, sustainability, and food security through smallholder farming, and was sponsored by Bayer Crop Science. The VBC serves as a valuable opportunity to explore real-world case studies and develop problem-solving strategies used in industry and academia.
The team from VT AgEcon Club, consisting of Michele Mickelwait, Jackson Banks, Delaney Moran, and Amanda Thrasher, placed 4th overall and received special recognition for achieving the highest team score in the first round.
Their challenge involved finding the best practical approach to implementing regenerative agriculture as a measuring, monitoring, and reporting system for smallholder rice farmers in India. The team proposed a three-year plan that started with data collection in the first year, followed by consultation services in the second year. Based on collected data, they aimed to refine their services and expand them to more farmers in the third year, helping to promote sustainable agricultural practices.
