Investing in Expertise
How Virginia Tech’s Online Master’s in Agricultural and Applied Economics program Fueled Rhett Montgomery’s Career Growth

After earning a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Rhett Montgomery began his career as a grain merchandiser in central Nebraska. But rather than staying the traditional course, he set his sights on a new goal: gaining deeper expertise in agricultural markets and data analytics. That decision led him to pursue an online master’s degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech, a move that would ultimately transform his career.
Now working remotely from Oklahoma as the Lead Market Analyst at DTN, Montgomery reflects on how Virginia Tech’s flexible, fully online program provided him with the skills, confidence, and opportunities to grow both professionally and personally.
Choosing the Right Program
“I had always been more interested in studying and analyzing the agricultural markets than just trading in them,” Montgomery said.
Although his background in economic theory was solid, he sought to improve his data analysis skills and statistical methodology knowledge.
Virginia Tech’s program stood out as the ideal fit. “To my knowledge, it was the only fully online master’s program in agricultural and applied economics that allowed me to continue working full time,” he says. “It offered everything I was looking for.”
Balancing Work, Life, and Education
Despite juggling a full-time job, a move to another state, and getting married, all during the program, Montgomery says the experience was “well-balanced and enriching.”
“It was perfect in terms of balancing the challenge and depth of the material with the understanding that many of us in the program were working professionals,” he recalls. “Never did I feel the program hindered my ability to accomplish things in my personal or professional life.”
Where the coursework was rigorous, it was also immediately rewarding. “I always found it exciting when I was learning a new tool or skillset.”
Real Career Impact
While still in the program, he made a significant career pivot, from trading cash grain to a lead market analysis role. Today, he uses every tool and concept learned in the program.
“When posed with a problem or question, I constantly reference my notes from various classes for possible solutions,” Montgomery said. “It’s been incredibly applicable.”
Advice for Future Students
For professionals considering an online master’s, especially in agricultural and applied economics, he offers strong encouragement.
“I would strongly advise anyone looking to deepen their knowledge and broaden their skillset in agricultural and applied economics or data analytics to apply to this program,” he says.
“It’s especially valuable for those working full-time or living in areas without local access to a relevant program.”
He emphasizes the importance of planning and time management, “While the program requires substantial time and effort, it’s designed with working professionals in mind. Budget your time weekly and try to apply what you learn to your own career; that was one of the most exciting parts for me.”
Above all, he sees the degree as an investment.
